Why Plank Hardwood Flooring Is Becoming Popular Again
Plank hardwood flooring is a type of hardwood flooring which has a long and distinguished tradition. In times gone by, it was usual for the floor of a house to be constructed from materials which were sourced in the immediate vicinity of the property. Typically, the planks derived from the local wood would be of differing lengths, and require a high degree of craftsmanship to fit together. As with so many other areas of ancient life, no two floors would ever be the same.
This was to chance somewhat during the years of industrial expansion, as the demand for lumber increased dramatically. The suppliers were often left with short pieces of board for which no obvious use could be found, and many of the pieces of larger and longer board which had knots or other defects were also left unused. It became obvious to use these planks of oak to create plank hardwood floors, and oak became the most popular material used in domestic flooring.
With the great surge in demand for housing following the end of World War II, plank hardwood flooring became standard. Oak floors were still being mass produced. As time went on, there was a bigger demand for individualized flooring, as people felt a greater need to branch out and be different. Many floors were constructed using planks of different lengths, and materials other than oak suddenly started to become fashionable. Now, we are seeing the introduction of engineered wood as a material from which to construct floors. This new man made wood derivative has both positive and negative attributes.
Engineered wood eliminates the need for wood to be a certain length, or to be free of flaws, because it mixes the wood with adhesives to form a new product. The great advantage of this is that it allows pieces of wood which had previously been useless to be used in the manufacture of this new compound. The disadvantage in environmental terms is that the wood is made using a far greater supply of fuel than would be necessary to work with natural wood. Add on to this the potential danger from the toxic resins used to manufacture the adhesives, and it is easy to see why many are skeptical about the value of engineered wood.
Plank hardwood floors are now being seen in more homes again due to the obvious concerns over carpets and the way they can lead to a worsening of allergies. Allergies are on the rise in our society, so it inevitable that there is going to be more concern over the factors which cause and aggravate them. Hardwood floors are also becoming more popular as people seeking to buy houses are looking to buy ready made solutions for their busy lives. You can cut a lot of the maintenance work out when you have high quality plank hardwood flooring.
