What To Consider If You Are Thinking Of Installing Engineered Hardwood Flooring
Engineered hardwood is manufactured using man made derivatives of wood, mixed with adhesives. This synthetic combination can give the resulting product a great advantage over the purely natural ones, but there are also disadvantages and potential problems which need to be considered. Engineered wood can be manufactured with a specific purpose in mind, and different mixtures and quantities of product can produce different performance levels. If the need for a certain type of wood is great enough, tests can be carried out which can ascertain the optimum concentration of each of the component parts.
Engineered hardwood can also make more efficient use of trees which need to be felled to produce it. Small trees which would be of little use in producing natural wood products can be used in the production of engineered wood. Because the wood is mixed with adhesives, it is possible to build panels of an extraordinary size. Even entire buildings have been constructed from engineered wood, which is a testament to its durability and ease of use.
The use of chemical adhesives does come with a price, however. Many of the resins used in the manufacture of these adhesives are highly toxic to the human body, which effectively limits the way in which they can be used. Even the act of cutting and refining the wood into the finished products can result in the emanation of toxic chemicals into the atmosphere. Don't be tempted to work with this type of wood unless you are absolutely sure of what you are doing. It is always safer to wear a proper mask in these circumstances.
The use of engineered hardwood in engineered hardwood flooring can result in problems for the householder which are simply not present with natural wood. If you live in a high humidity area, then you should be very careful about installing synthetic wood products in your home. They are more prone to warp when they are damp, and they can soak up water which can lead to permanent damage. Although it is possible to apply coating to reduce this risk, that can lead to fungus growth which can be equally debilitating.
Engineered hardwood flooring also has one defect which will not be apparent to any individual user, but which is of vital importance to the future of our planet. Because of the manufacturing processes used, this type of wood is inherently less fuel efficient than the wood in its natural form. With the world's energy supplies at the level they are, that is a consideration which must be borne in mind. All in all, for most domestic purposes, a natural hardwood floor will prove o be the superior choice, even though it may be more expensive initially. There is less risk with natural wood than with most types of engineered hardwood.
